Excuse me, but you omitted the ceremony of signing the cheque; a thing I have often done myself: I reinclose it, so please sign it & send it back to us; if you don't think better of it. Yours very truly, ~William Morris, 4 January 1889, Merton Abbey, Surry. Letter to John Carruthers
Lodden was designed by William Morris and made at Merton Abbey in 1883. It was originally block printed on cotton fabric but was later sold as wallpaper and adapted for a rug. Lodden has a very large repeat, more suited for a mural than tiles. I have two adaptations of Lodden for tile, in light and dark variations.
Lodden is available as a border tile (seamless on the horizontal) and as backsplash / fireplace tiles (seamless in both directions)
Border tiles are seamless on the horizontal only.
Light borders are available with white, gray, or cream backgrounds. From top left: Blue and Gold white background, Blue and White, Morris colors on cream, Blues on Cream, Reds and Grays on light cream, Cool Lodden on White
From top left: indigo background, cobalt blue background, black background
Designer: William Morris
Sizes: 4.25 inch, 6 inch, or 8 tiles
Background Colors: Black,Cobalt, Indigo
4.25 inch square tiles: $53 each
6 inch square tiles: $63 each
8 inch square tiles: $78 each
Lodden variation from Morris & Co. swatch book, 1900-1910 (V&A).
The design modifications are probably the work of John Henry Dearle. It has fewer and different colors than the first Lodden produced at Merton Abby in 1883.
