In Hindu mythology, parrots are associated with Kama, the god of love and his consort, Rati.
Once upon a time, a parrot lived in a most beautiful tree, always returning to the same tree. Chakra, King of the Gods, beecame with the parrot's loyalty to the tree and decided to put the parrot's loyalty to the test. He removed all the tree's leaves, leaving it stark and no longer beautiful. The parrot was disappointed to see the tree in such a condition, stayed loyal to the tree, staying with the tree day after day.
Now Chakra was awed by the loyalty of the parrot. A golden breeze arose, Chakra smiled, and the leaves returned. The tree was restored to its former glory and beauty. Hindu Folktale
Exotic birds such as parrots, macaws, cockatoos were popular Victorian pets. While generally considered appropriate pets for women, especially lonely women, as an outlet for their emotions, both Rossetti and the De Morgans kept exotic birds. Several De Morgan panels feature parrots.
