Philip Webb Whorls and Flowers
Philip WebbWilliam De Morgan and Philip Webb were key figures in the early directions taken by Morris's firm. Best known for his architectural design for Red House, William Morris's first married home, and later for the animals in 'The Forest' tapestry, Philip Webb was a founding member of Morris, Marshall, Faulkner and Co., and hence the Arts and Crafts Movement itself.
Morris is so much a large solar energy that the stars around him can be overshadowed. Just as De Morgan is known as the Father of Arts & Crafts ceramics, Philip Webb, a major architect of the Gothic Revival movement, is often called the Father of Arts & Crafts Architecture. With Morris, he founded the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings in 1877.
Morris met Philip Webb while working for the architect G.E. Street in London. Morris and Edward Burne-Jones were sharing living quarters at the time, and the three remained friends and went on to establish 'The Firm' in 1861.
Webb's collaborated with Morris from the earliest days, as seen in tiles as Longden and Red House Birds, through his contributions to The Forest into designs for Kelmscott book covers, such as William Morris's Story of the Volsungs and Niblungs.
