Pre-Raphaelite and Golden Age

Magic Realism is not new. The label's new, the specific Latin American form of it is new, its modern popularity is new, but it's been around as long as literature has been around. ~Terri Windling

One consequence of the Pre-Raphaelite movement in general, spurred by William Morris's fascination with the printed word in particular, was the birth in the late 19th century of the Golden Age of Illustration. Gift books, often with fairy tale and adventure themes, were themselves works of art, with gilded edges and cover art became popular gifts for children and other adults.
