Fairy Tale Fireplace Tiles

I made a new religion of poetic tradition, of a fardel of stories, and of personages, and of emotions, inseparable from their first expression, passed on from generation to generation by poets and painters. I wished for a world where I could discover this tradition perpetually, and not in pictures and poems only, but in tiles round the chimney piece and in the hangings that kept out the draft. ~William Butler Yeats

Edward Burne-Jones fairy tale tiles for the fireplace overmantels at 'The Hill'

Panels from the Beauty and the Beast,
Cinderella, and Sleeping Beauty tile sets.

I have reproduction tiles based on two original installations: 'The Hill', home of architect Miles Birket Foster, and 'Tromode House', more properly called Cronkbourne House on the Isle of Man.

The Hill: Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast, Sleeping Beauty

Morris, Marshall, and Faulkner produced three sets of fairy tale tiles: Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast, and Sleeping Beauty. Three sets of overmantel tiles, and two side panels, were made for 'The Hill'. The initial panels were designed by Edward Burne-Jones and painted by Lucy Faulkner.

The fairy tale tiles measure 4.25 inches square, with each panel being 8.5 inches wide.

Pricing for Fairy Tale Tiles

The Fairy Tale tiles can be sold by the fairy tale, or as a complete set.

All three sets: $1905 (Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast, Sleeping Beauty)

The different sets are also available individually. Pricing and tile specifications for the individual fairy tale sets are on the Fairy Tale pages themselves.

Swan Tiles Availability*: Tiles without custom work (see How to Order Tile for what that means) can ship fairly quickly in the 4.25 and 6 inch versions. For other sizes, there may be a little longer wait on larger orders as I don't stock as many of these blanks.

Tromode (Cronkbourne House): Fairy Tale Tiles

The Beauty and the Beast tile fireplace tiles at Cronkbourne are slightly different from those at 'The Hill'. The tiles were removed and sold at 'Christie's before the estate was purchased by the current owner and we are in discussions about how best to proceed to restore the fireplace. Less well-known are the Cinderella side panels installed there. I have only just begun work on reproduction tiles for the side panels. Cronkbourne also has a Victorian fireplace, probably installed much later, consisting of Morris-DeMorgan blue and white tiles mixed with Delfware tiles.

Photos of the tile panels and fireplace were graciously provided by the current owner of the estate, Mr. Graham Warwick.

Versions of the Fairy Tale Tiles

The different sets of the Fairy Tale tiles are not the same. of Beauty and the Beast has the Wedding Scene from the Hill version of Sleeping Beauty as its last panel, and the father returning home panel has been removed.
