William De Morgan, Father of Arts & Crafts ceramics, made a series of fantastic birds and beasts, some, like the owl, dodo, and kingfisher, taken from nature but others, such as the the jabberwocky, griffin, and hippocamp come from myth and imagination.

De Morgan ships and fantastic creatures tiles
William De Morgan began making his fantastic birds and animals as early as his Chelsea period. The first tiles were red lustre, but were later made in red lustre, blue, green, and sepia, and were very popular. (See Lewis Carroll Fireplace at Oxford and Barn Owls and Scrolls for red lustre.)

Lewis Carroll's met with William De Morgan to select tiles for his rooms at Oxford. His fireplace incorporates a De Morgan ship triptych and was done with red lustre tiles with fantastic animals from Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass. Mixing blue and white ships with birds and beasts is a great idea.

$4 of the price of each Fantastic Bird and Beast tile is donated to Wolf Conservation Center, where you can learn about how wolves help the environment, how the introduction of wolves in yellowstone has caused a cascale of ecological change, including an increase in beaver populations, bringing back the aspen, as well as trout and mountain whitefish. You can even adopt a wolf.
