William Morris and William De Morgan
Membland Single Accent Tiles

I do not want art for a few any more than education for a few, or freedom for a few. ~William Morris

William Morris, Membland Tiles accent tile

A William Morris- William De Morgan Collaboration

Williams Morris and De Morgan collaborated on the tiles for the bath in Membland Hall -- each of the original panels was 63 inches tall! You can see the original panel and designs Here. These accent tiles are adapted from the tiles in the center of the larger panel. The original tiles were on a dark colbalt blue background that has darkened over time, making the blue colors even more striking.

Single Accent Tiles

William Morris Acanthus tile for Huntington Scholars Grove, tile by William De Morgan

The tile you see above to the left is the accent tile I submitted for the Huntington Scholars Grove project at the Huntington Library in San Marino, California. I have added it to the available Membland Accent Tiles. I adore the Huntington. When my daughter was small, we lived not far and were able to visit many times. The Huntington Museum also has one of the Edward Burne-Jones Cinderella Story Tiles made by Morris & Co. for a fireplace overmantel at The Hill (Read more about their history on the link). If you are in the area, do try to visit the Huntington, and also the Huntington Gardens. The cactus gardens is swoon-worthy. If you haven't been, don't miss the annual Huntington Gardens Plan Sale. They have things you absolutely will not find anywhere else. I bought an "orange silk" orange-red rose there, a simple deep orange rose that produced one single rose the first year, but that one rose lasted forever. It stayed in Highland Park when we moved to Flagstaff.

In addition, the following variations are available. The Membland accent tiles are available with each of the offered backgrounds, on 4.25, 6 x 6, and 8 x 8 inch ceramic.

About the Membland Hall Panels

William Morris watercolor design for Membland tile panels, 1876

Six of a unknown number of Membland panels survive. The panels on display at the Morris Gallery have had broken tiles replaced and therefore do not match up in color or dimension, in the same way as did the original Morris and Co. panels.

Membland Stair Risers

Membland is an excellent candidate for stair risers, especially as statement tiles in a foyer. Risers are *usually* six inches high, so depending on the number of steps, the full mural, a half panel, or accent / border tiles would work on stair risers. The mural is 36 inches wide. If your stairs are narrower than that, accent tiles offer another option.
