In the 1870s-80s, Morris, Rossetti, and De Morgan became interested in what they called 'Persian' tiles. These were actually Iznik or Damascus tiles from Syria. De Morgan based his Persian color pallette on thee tiles and many of his Fulham tiles, such as those made for 'The Arabia' used these colors. De Morgan was commissions by Victorian Artist and president of the Royal Acadamy, Frederic Lord Leighton, to reproduce tiles from Leighton's collection of Islamic tiles, many from Damascus dating from the 15th to 17th centuries, as many of the original Iznik tiles were missing or broken in shipping from the middle east.

Iznik Empress Fan TilesDisclaimer: I have based these tiles on similar tiles at the V&A and De Morgan Foundations; Only the border tiles, however, are true reproduction tiles. The accent and backsplash incorporate De Morgan elements from other tiles: The moons and comets are taken from other De Morgan tiles so if you are De Morgan aficionado searching for true reproductions, you should stay with the border tile. The Iznik Empress Fan accents are only available on six-inch tiles. They are seamless on the horizontal.

The Iznik Empress Fan border is the only one of the series that does not have elements from other De Morgan designs. Each tile is 8 inches by 6 inches and is seamless on the horizontal.

The Iznik Empress Fan border two-row border consists of six tiles. Tiles are 4.25 x 4.25 inches square, or 6 x 6 inches square.

Iznik Empress Fan Installation, Portland Oregon
The 24-tile Iznik Empress backsplash is available on 4.25 or 6 inch tiles. It can be extended on the horizontal to fit your space.

The 36-tile Iznik Empress backsplash will work for most kitchens. It can be stacked for increased height, or you can add columns in sets of two for increased width. It is available on both 4.25 and 6 inch ceramic tiles.
