The Lady of Shalott Backsplash

William Holman Hunt, Lady of Shalott

The power of an apostrophe:

Out flew the web and floated wide;
The mirror crack'd from side to side;

Out flew the web and floated wide;
The mirror cracked from side to side;

There the river eddy whirls
And there the surly village-churls
And the red cloaks of market girls....

For often thro' the silent nights
A funeral, with plumes and lights
And music, went to Camelot

The Lady of Shalott, based on Tennyson's poem, and references to it were common for more than a century. Several Pre-Raphaelites revisited the themes of half-sick of shadows, art holding the mirror up to nature, and the destructive yet exhilerating madness of the reality and the passions of the senses.

Alfred Lord Tennyson wrote The Lady of Shalott between 1832 and 1842, beginning when the artist was only 5 years old. The poem was immensely popular. It is difficult to overstate the impact of that poem on Victorian consciousness in general and the Pre-Raphaelites in particular.

William Holman Hunt

William Holman Hunt was born 2 April 1827, making him 16 when Tennyson's final version was published. The Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood was founded just 5 years later. A founding member of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, Hunt began painting The Lady of Shalott in 1886, well after the group had disbanded. He continued to work on it until 1905. It was completed by his lifetime friend, Arthur Hughes, when Hunt's failing eyesight made further progress impossible.

He said, "She has a lovely face;
God in his mercy lend her grace,
The Lady of Shalott."
