Lewis Carroll standing before his William De Morgan tile fireplace at Christ Church, Oxford. Carroll (Charles Dodgson) was a good friend of the Rossetti family. Dante Gabriel Rossetti was a principal at Morris, Marshall, Faulkner and Co., where De Morgan began his tile career.

William De Morgan began making his fantastic birds and animals as early as his Chelsea period. The first tiles were red lustre, but were later made in red lustre, blue, green, and sepia, and were very popular.
